Hair Transplant Surgery
A hair transplant is a surgical procedure that moves healthy, permanent hair follicles — usually from the back and sides of the scalp — into areas where hair has thinned or been lost. Because transplanted follicles are genetically resistant to the hormones that drive male pattern baldness, they continue growing for life once established. At Utah Hair Restoration in Layton, Utah, every hair transplant is planned and performed personally by Dr. John Bitner, a board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon and the only physician in Utah fellowship-trained in both facial plastic surgery and hair transplantation surgery.
Hair restoration is not a one-size-fits-all procedure. The technique, graft count, and hairline design that work for a 55-year-old with advanced thinning are different from what a 32-year-old with an early receding hairline needs. That is why the process here begins with a physician consultation and a personalized plan — not a sales appointment.
Why Patients Choose a Fellowship-Trained Hair Transplant Surgeon
The single most important variable in a hair transplant is the surgeon planning and performing it. Hair restoration is both a medical procedure and an aesthetic one: graft survival depends on surgical technique, while a natural result depends on artistic judgment — hairline shape, follicle angle, and the mix of single-hair and multi-hair grafts along the frontal edge.
Dr. John Bitner, MD, PhD brings both. He is board-certified in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery and completed dedicated fellowship training in hair transplantation surgery. He is the sole surgeon at Utah Hair Restoration — you will not be handed off to a technician-run procedure — and only one surgery is performed per day in the practice’s private, in-office surgical suite. Patients travel from across Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, and Nevada for that level of surgeon involvement; see our out-of-town patient guide if you’re coming from outside the Wasatch Front.
Hair Transplant Techniques We Offer
FUE Hair Transplant (Follicular Unit Extraction). Individual follicular units are removed one at a time with micro-punches under 1 mm in diameter, leaving no linear scar. FUE is often preferred by patients who wear their hair short.
FUT Hair Transplant (Follicular Unit Transplantation / strip method). A narrow strip of donor scalp is removed and dissected under magnification into individual grafts. FUT allows large graft counts in a single session and preserves donor supply for future sessions.
Not sure which fits your goals? Start with our side-by-side FUE vs. FUT comparison, or let Dr. Bitner recommend an approach at your consultation. The practice also offers NeoGraft® extraction and robotic hair transplant technology, along with beard transplants, eyebrow and eyelash transplants, and hairline advancement surgery.
Who Is a Candidate for Hair Restoration?
Good candidates generally have stable or predictable hair loss, adequate donor hair on the back and sides of the scalp, realistic expectations, and good overall health. Men with pattern hair loss make up the majority of patients, but women experiencing hair loss can also be excellent candidates when the cause has been properly evaluated. Age matters less than the pattern and progression of loss.
Some patients are better served — at least initially — by non-surgical medical treatment to stabilize loss before surgery. Dr. Bitner will tell you honestly if that’s the case. For a fuller self-assessment, read Am I a Good Candidate?
What to Expect: The Hair Transplant Process
- Consultation. Dr. Bitner examines your scalp, evaluates donor density, discusses your goals, and builds a written treatment plan and estimate.
- Surgery day. Procedures are performed under local anesthesia (with sedation available) in the office surgical suite. Grafts are harvested, prepared under magnification, and implanted following your natural growth pattern — including the single-hair transition zone that defines a natural frontal hairline.
- Recovery. Most patients return to desk work within a few days. Transplanted hairs shed in the first weeks — an expected phase — then regrow permanently. See the full month-by-month results timeline.
How Much Does a Hair Transplant Cost in Utah?
Utah Hair Restoration publishes transparent session-based pricing rather than quoting vague estimates. FUT sessions are priced by session size, and FUE is priced per graft, with a written estimate provided at consultation. Because overhead in Utah is lower than in major coastal markets, many out-of-state patients find that traveling here costs less overall than surgery at home. Full details, payment options, and financing are on our hair transplant cost page.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hair Transplant Surgery
Who performs the hair transplant at Utah Hair Restoration?
Every procedure is performed by Dr. John Bitner, MD, PhD, a board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon fellowship-trained in hair transplantation surgery. He is the practice’s only surgeon, and only one surgery is scheduled per day so each patient has his full attention.
Is a hair transplant permanent?
Yes. Transplanted follicles come from the donor zone at the back and sides of the scalp, where hair is genetically resistant to the hormone-driven miniaturization that causes pattern baldness, as described by the National Library of Medicine. Once established, transplanted hair grows for life, though non-transplanted native hair can continue thinning over time.
How long does hair transplant surgery take?
Most sessions take a full day — typically 4 to 8 hours depending on graft count. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, and patients go home the same day.
When will I see results?
Transplanted hairs typically shed within 2–4 weeks, new growth begins around months 3–4, and results mature between 12 and 18 months. See our results timeline for the month-by-month progression.
Do you treat patients from outside Utah?
Yes. Patients regularly travel from Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Nevada, and beyond. Our out-of-town guide covers travel timing, lodging near Layton, and what to expect. The office is about 25 minutes from Salt Lake City International Airport.
FUE or FUT — which is right for me?
It depends on how you wear your hair, how much coverage you need, and your donor supply. Our FUE vs. FUT comparison breaks down the differences, and Dr. Bitner will recommend a technique at your consultation.
