How FUE Hair Transplant Surgery Works
Step 1 — Donor area preparation. Hair at the back and sides of the head is trimmed to 2–3 mm so each follicular unit and its exit angle are clearly visible. The area is anesthetized and cleaned.
Step 2 — Extraction. Using a powered extraction device fitted with a micro-punch, Dr. Bitner removes follicular units in a scattered, randomized pattern, leaving surrounding hair intact so the donor area heals without a visible change in density. Precise visualization of each follicle’s angle protects the growth center of the hair — the key to graft survival.
Step 3 — Graft preparation. Harvested units are sorted and kept in a controlled holding solution while the recipient area is prepared.
Step 4 — Implantation. Grafts are placed at the natural angle, direction, and density of your original growth pattern. Single-hair grafts are used along the frontal hairline to create the soft, irregular transition that makes a transplant undetectable.

When FUE Is the Right Choice
FUE surgery is typically recommended when:
- You wear your hair short. If a thin linear scar at the back of the head is unacceptable, FUE is the clear choice.
- You’ve had a previous strip procedure. Patients who have had an FUT hair transplant and lack the scalp laxity for another strip can often still have FUE — alone, or combined with a smaller strip to maximize graft numbers.
- You need a smaller, targeted session. Hairline refinement, scar camouflage, beard transplants, and eyebrow transplants are all well suited to FUE harvesting.

Transplanted hairs shed over the first 2–4 weeks — a normal, expected phase — before follicles enter a resting period and begin producing new, permanent growth around months 3–4.
